Be a Friend to Google

Social networking for business is interesting to one who may not always care for all aspects of social interaction. Twitter is being seen as a great customer service tool by many large firms, but I have not followed the site, mainly because I am not going out asking for connections. While the same holds true for Facebook. However, I do recognize that this is a new wave of the web.
Google seems to be moving at all directions at once. I had not realized that they have taken over the open directory dmoz. With everyone trying to leverage social networking for marketing, you know that the minds at this ever present search engine would be looking at ways to be involved in this aspect of our lives. Adding ads to these sites has not been well received, but Google has a new development in this field, Google Friends. I could see this being useful to people who have been promoting RSS feeds. It appears to be a good feedback system when readers do not always comment, and you want to know what is bringing people to your site.
Did you want your search to be more targeted? Surf Canyon has created a little plug-in that works with Firefox, but it is said to work with ie too. It is a small little app that places a target by the search results for Google, Yahoo, and MSN. When you click on a link, the program will reorder the listings, so they are more appropriate to your search.
These programs will create a new paradigm for SEO. Personalized search could mean that we need to place more importance on branding and marketing ourselves than looking for a more general term such as “Houston Real Estate”. If people will be looking at a more specific information, it would be good that we should be there. With Google looking at our friends, ranking on a page could be effected. I noticed that at times people become complacent when they feel their position is secured, but this new service could cause them to loose out in search.
