The rafter goes underneath the roof sheathing. The ceiling joist is the framing piece which the interior ceiling covering attaches to. The purlin is a brace which helps to distribute the weight of the roof. Not shown is the purlin brace. The purlin brace is a framing member that attaches several purlins together. The brace is a framing member which connects the rafters from one side of the roof to the other side (ceiling joists may also be doing this function when going from side to side). The ridge beam runs along the top of the attic, and it is a structural member that the rafters attach to.
